Having a loud garage door can be very bothersome, especially if you have a room above the garage. Not to mention if you have a teenage driver that tends to come home late and the garage door wakes you up every time they pull in. Don’t worry – fixing a noisy garage is rather simple and does not require much time to do.
Whenever a garage door is used, vibrations are emitted. The vibrations can make screws loosen over time. First tighten up all the nuts and bolts on your garage door to make sure everything is safe and secure. You can use a deep socket wrench on all the nuts, but don’t over tighten them. Also, check for worn parts and replace them if needed. Spraying moving components with garage door lubricant to help keep the parts moving smoothly, this also helps to prolong the doors life span.
A chain drive garage door opener can be very loud and cause the door to jerk and smack against the track. If this is happening to your door, try and tighten up the chain or you could even switch to a belt drive opener!
If the door is unbalanced, that can lead to noise as well. After a while, the door can actually buckle and stop functioning if not properly balanced.
Most garage doors have metal rollers and metal tracks. You can imagine how metal on metal might sound grinding together. You can replace metal rollers with nylon rollers to eliminate some of the noise and vibration.
Noisy garage doors can be caused by worn out rollers, cables, broken springs, loose hardware, or parts that need lubrication.
If you have broken springs, please do not try and fix them yourself, this a very dangerous job that is best left to the professionals.
